Air Fryer Banana Halwa Wontons is Kelyacha Halwa (as it is called in Marathi), going fancy shmancy and healthy!

Kelyacha Halwa is a traditional Maharashtrian sweet made with ripe bananas, ghee, sugar, grated coconut and cardamom.

Bananas are plentiful in tropical India and I still can hear the banana hawker coming through our neighborhood every evening shouting โ€œkeli, keli, keliโ€ โ€ฆ.and then some line added to that to entice the buyers. As kids,we would try to figure out what he said after โ€œkeli, keli keli (which means bananas in Marathi) but much as we tried we all came up with different interpretations every single day! So, it still remains a mystery to me.

Some foods and their aromas evoke childhood memories, donโ€™t they? I have always loved fruit so Pappa, my dad, would get huge boxes of whichever fruit was is season. Banana was the only fruit I was not fond of eating but liked the flavor. Hard to believe now, but I was a skinny child and a picky eater. So Aai, my mom would make this kelyacha halwa which I loved. I can still smell the aroma of the ambrosial halwa filling the home!

My children are quick to point out how pampered I was, and I agree . But I remind them that all my Aaiโ€™s efforts to fatten me up paid off when I was carrying themโ€ฆI am still trying to lose that baby weight and the mommy tummy ๐Ÿ™‚

Air Fryer Banana Halwa Wontons make an elegant dessert with the golden, crisp wontons (check the recipe) wrapped around the ambrosial halwa centers. I brushed them with honey and sprinkled them with ground pistachios. Air fryer helps make this dessert so healthy!

Tatung Multi Fryer
Tatung Multifryer

In full disclosure, this is a sponsored post, but my opinions are my own.

I liked Tatungโ€™s Multi Fryer because it is roomy, easy to use and easy to clean. It comes with a paddle for baking that can be easily removed if not needed. One can set the timer and walk off as it shuts off by itself, which is a blessing for todayโ€™s busy lifestyle.

I have been experimenting with several savory and sweet recipes with Tatungโ€™s Multi -Fryer and have been happy with the results overall. For this dessert recipe, I โ€˜friedโ€™ 4 big sized wontons in just 2 teaspoons of ghee, which made this otherwise deep-fried dessert, so guilt free!

  1. Heat the teaspoon of ghee in a sautรฉ pan over medium heat. Add the sliced bananas and stir them for 2 minutes or so.
  2. Add the brown sugar or honey and the grated coconut and let the mixture warm through, about 2 minutes more.
  3. ย Stir in the cardamom powder and remove from heat. Set aside and let it cool.
  4. Divide mixture in 4. Place in center of the spring roll pastry sheet, fold it into 4ths to look like wontons, seal close to the filling, using very little water, if necessary.
  5. Brush both sides of theย  wrappers with 2 teaspoons of the melted ghee. Place them in the air fryer for 10 minutes. Carefully turn them around, taking care, as the air fryer will be hot.
  6. Set the timer for another 10 minutes. The wontons will be golden and crispy at the edges.
  7. Let it coll. Remove from the air fryer and brush with the honey.
  8. Sprinkle powdered pistachio and rose petals if using and serve with cream or ice cream if desired.

  1. Unlike you Sandhya, I’ve always been a lover of bananas – I mean any variety really. To date, I eat one a day, so I know I would absolutely love this simple yet luscious dessert. Of course those Indian flavors ghee, cardamom and rose petals had to have given it some extra lusciousness ๐Ÿ™‚ I would probably add some nuts in it too as I love anything with nuts. Beauty on a plate! Well done! I’ve never cooked with wonton wrappers ever, is it easy?

    1. Good for you Loretta! Bananas are so healthy. The banana halwa I made for filling is a traditional Maharashtrian halwa with grated coconut but without nuts but I am sure nuts will taste awesome.
wonton wrappers are very easy to work with. I also made some with spring roll wrappers just because I had them at home. They came out yummy too.
      Have a fabulous weekend!

    1. I am figuring out which recipes work the best in airfryer. I really liked the how crunchy crispy these dessert wontons were without the deep frying. Also loved making brussel sprouts and baked veggies in it in 20 minutes, hassle free. Tatung has a big capacity so that helps.
Overall it is fabulous for some recipes. I am enjoying playing with my new toy ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Totally agree about foods evoking strong childhood memories Sandhya – something that’s often inspired my posts. My husband always talks about Mangoes – they have a special place in his heart because they were so treasured having grown up in a Indian community / house in the UK – they were a treat because they were so expensive and rare compared to in India….

    1. Mangoes are absolutely my favorite too so I can relate to him. I am such a mango snob here in the us after having eaten the best mangoes growing up in India ๐Ÿ™‚
Yes so many childhood memories associated with food, right?
