#Lower in fat,# healthier,# quick and easy to make, #yummy # 5 ingredients (6 if you count salt:) …..need I say more? These lightly sweetened yams and mashed savory sweet potatoes will not weight you down task wise and otherwise!

Both of them have the appetizing taste and aroma obtained from just a touch of ghee and the creaminess of coconut milk powder.  I have pictures of the box of coconut milk powder in my post for Rice Bowl with Potato Curry and have used it in other recipes like Curried Butternut Squash Soup and Rice Bowl with Fish Curry, also. The yams are lightly sweetened with jaggery and freshly grated nutmeg for that distinctive taste and the savory sweet potatoes have a hint of cumin. We liked them both so much that we could not decide which one is our favorite.

But both are super quick to make! So to my friends who are asking for the recipe for Thanksgiving, you will be tempted to make both. Your guests will have two  dishes with original  taste and  their pretty colors will make a gorgeous platter.

My Indian friends will notice that I used a chakli mold for the swirls! This is my crazy, creative side 🙂 Who says that we have to use the ingenious mold for chaklis only? I am always fascinated by the mold, its design and the crisp edges in the swirls. So I figured why not use if for the yam and sweet potato swirls?

I dusted the swirls with coconut powder  because I like that look, but it is reminding me of winter 😦

Time to enjoy the warm and yummy yams and sweet potatoes!


For the sweet yams-

  • 2 medium yams, boiled , peeled and mashed. I put them through a ricer to make sure they are smooth.
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of jaggery, finely powdered or grated. I used 1 ½ tablespoons. It will depend on how sweet the yam is by itself.
  • 2 tablespoons coconut milk powder

  • a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • sea salt to taste

For the savory sweet potatoes-

  • 2 medium purple sweet potatoes, boiled, peeled and mashed. I put them through the ricer too. I get the sweet potatoes at Hmart, the Korean store
  • 2 tablespoons coconut milk powder
  • sea salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon warm ghee
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seed powder

For dusting- 1 teaspoon of coconut milk powder

To make the Yummy yams and the Savory Sweet Potatoes-

  1. Simply combine all the ingredients, fluff with a fork and serve! Or make the swirls, dust with the coconut milk powder and serve!
