MMM…….Mother’s Day Special! Easy, delectable, nutritious, vegetarian breakfast that kids can make for mom.
As Mother’s day is approaching, I started thinking of a recipe that would be super easy for kids to make for their mom. Little did I know that after thinking of many different recipes, Malvani malpua would pop in my head. One of my Aai’s (mom’s) childhood memories that was very close to her heart was the one with a story about malpua in Malvan, India. I learned all about cooking from my Aai, so this post celebrates my dearest Aai and my memories of her – both of which I hold very close to my heart.
Today, as we made the malpuas, I was happy to share the stories with my daughter. She made the fruit decorations for mom’s plate too. Of course, her first question was ‘what are malpuas?’
Malpuas vary from region to region in India. But generally, malpuas are made of a batter made with all-purpose flour or maida, semolina and sugar. Spoonfuls of the batter are dropped in hot ghee and deep fried into puris . They are then soaked in sugar syrup in Malvan and Maharashtra area. In northern parts of India, malpuas are topped with a condensed milk rabdi.
In developing this recipe, I ventured into trying malpuas with whole wheat flour, semolina and ragi flour. Also adding bananas to the batter is my twist on a malpua recipe. Isn’t that such a delectable and nutritious combination for mom? Plus, these are not deep fried either. They are made into little pancakes on a griddle and topped with honey or molasses (my favorite).
The batter is super easy to make and just needs to rest for ½ an hour before making the malpuas. If your mom wakes up super early (like I do), this batter can made in advance and refrigerated the night before.
So early morning on Mother’s Day, remove the batter from refrigerator, let the batter come to room temperature while you make your fruit flowers and get the platter ready for mom.

These easy to make, delicious, nutritious and unique Malpuas are sure to be a treat for Moms on Mother’s day!
Marvelous Malvani Malpuas
For the batter-
- 2 ripe bananas, peeled and mashed or 1 (8 ounce) cup of mashed bananas
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- ¼ cup semolina or sooji
- ¼ cup ragi satva flour (more about ragi satva here)
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup milk. I used 1 percent milk.
- ½ teaspoon green cardamom powder
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg powder
- Pinch of salt
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
To make the malpuas-
- 1 tablespoon ghee
- Honey or molasses
To make the Marvelous Malvani Malpuas-
- Combine all ingredients for the batter in a blender and blend until you have a smooth mixture. Cover and set aside for a minimum of half an hour. It can be at room temperature for up to a couple of hours or can be stored overnight in the refrigerator. When making the malpua pancakes, make sure the batter is at room temperature. Add the baking soda and mix it in the batter in a circular motion.
- Grease a non –stick pan lightly with ghee, over medium heat. Turn the heat to low, pour a ladle full of batter on it to make pancakes about 3 inches in diameter. (See photo) Do not spread the batter around. Drizzle a few drops of ghee around it and let it cook.
- The malpuas will puff up and have holes in them as they cook. Flip and cook on other side. Timing will be about 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining batter.
- Drizzle with honey or molasses and serve!
Note- Children should be always be supervised by an adult when making the malpuas and the fruit flowers and decorations.
