Family Chex Mix

This is not your average snack mix but a vibrant mix so bold and flavorful, that I bet you will never want to eat the ‘regular’ one ever again! And of course it is lighter than the ‘regular’ one 🙂

Family Chex Mix- Bold and flavorful and yes….addictive!

Do you have any holiday traditions of your own, that you have set? I happened to have done so with this family chex mix, even without even realizing that I was setting a tradition!

So here is my story. I confess that I am guilty of trying to sneak in nutrition, when it comes to my children. So when I made appetizers and snacks to munch on, as we prepped and cooked for Thanksgiving over the years, this Chex mix happened to be one of them. I liked making it as I could sneak in the almonds, walnuts and pistachios that my kids did not eat otherwise. And as for the bold flavor, it comes from the Indian taste palette….need I say more? 🙂

Look at this vibrant flavoring-

Add the dry ingredients and toss well to coat-

Now when I am planning the appetizers and snacks, asking my children what they would like, the conversation starts with, “of course the family chex mix and then….”

So unbeknown to me, I have started a tradition of my own! Yay!

Here is the recipe for our Family Chex Mix-

Family Chex Mix

Ingredients-

  • ¼ cup each of the raw walnuts, pistachios, peanuts and almonds
  • 2 tablespoons butter (substitute with coconut or olive oil for vegan version)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 8 cups corn squares cereal or a combination of rice and corn squares
  • 1 cup thin mini pretzels
  • 1 cup oyster crackers

To make the Family Chex Mix-

  1. Combine the nuts in a microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for 2 minutes, stirring once in between. Microwave timings vary so adjust timing according to your microwave.
  2. Heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, add the chili, turmeric, garlic and onion powders and stir for a few seconds until they are fragrant. Remove from heat. Add the balsamic vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and the brown sugar and stir until the brown sugar is dissolved.
  3. Add the corn squares cereal, toasted nuts, pretzels and crackers and toss them very well to coat evenly with the liquid mixture.
  4. Bake in a preheated 200 degree Fahrenheit oven for 25 minutes, stirring once in between. Cool and store in an airtight container.

  2. Wow! I didn’t realize chevda was so easy to assemble. I will definitely be making this. Both our daughters love “hot mix” as they call it, so before they came home, I went to the Indian store and got them some chevda, but I think your version is healthier. I might add raisins to it too for a sweet/sour/hot taste. I’ve never made it before, so thanks for the recipe 🙂

    1. Loretta, both my kids love it too. I made this and the Microwave Chivda with oats that is on my blog. Both were gone and I will be making another batch soon:)
