Rice bowl with Potato Curry …..all in under 20 minutes!
Soul food in a Bowl- easy, light and delectable food the day after the huge Thanksgiving feast!
Rice Bowl with Potato Curry- ready in under 20 minutes!
serves 4
This rice bowl with potato curry is my daughter’s absolute favorite ‘soul food’. After a hectic day, this is ‘the’ food that she finds relaxing. She was thrilled to discover that her friends at school loved this curry just as much as she did. The traditional recipe for this is a little daunting when one is in a hurry, as it is made with grated fresh coconut, that is ground with the freshly roasted spices……you get the picture…… it is not something one would necessarily look forward to making after a long day;)
So this is a simplified version of the Potato Curry called Ambat Batata in Marathi. Literally translated, it means Sour Potato. Perhaps it gets its name because of the tamarind used in this curry. But with the brown sugar or jaggery and the red chili powder , it is…

Super easy, baked Sutarfeni
Dear friends,
Are you going to Diwali parties this weekend? Make this easy, figure friendly baked Sutarfeni!
Complex recipe for Sutarfeni, now made super easy and yes…… baked!
The much loved Sutarfeni is a dessert that garners much admiration in India. It is made of super thin noodles that are fried, sweetened with a sugar syrup and sprinkled with nuts. The sugar syrup is scented with cardamom and saffron or rose essence. I love both!
As you know, I have been experimenting with a lot of my favorite traditional recipes. I am thrilled when I find an easy short cut to an otherwise laborious recipe. I am ecstatic when my trials succeed in making the food healthier!
Such is the case with the baked Sutarfeni. Years ago when I saw kataifi at the middle eastern store, I knew I could make Sutarfeni without having to make the super thin noodles myself. In previous years, I had deep fried the shredded dough to make…

Luscious Avocado Coconut Burfi…in 5 minutes!
Dear friends,
Reblogging one of my top posts for the festival of Narali Pournima and Raksha Bandhan coming up this week.
Love,
❤

Luscious Avocado Coconut Burfi …..in 5 minutes!
A special halwa for Narali Pournima and Raksha bandhan this weekend! Narali Pournima is a jubilant festival celebrated in Maharashtra and along some coastal areas in India. It is celebrated on the full moon day in the holy month of Shravan. The word naral means coconut. Pournima is the full moon day. The monsoon season, during which the seas are turbulent, comes to an end around this time and it is once again safe for the fishermen to brave the seas. But before they do that the families offer the auspicious coconut to the sea, praying for the safety of the fishermen.
Foods containing coconut are made to celebrate this festival. It is also Raksha bandhan day, a special day of celebrations for brothers and sisters. One of the most popular foods made on this day is the coconut burfi or vadi.

‘Indian Noodles’ for the Book club
Indian and Thai inspired Seviya Upma! It was my turn to host the book club this month. We read ‘Inside the O Brien’s’ by Lisa Genova. I absolutely love her style of writing! I was riveted to the story of a seemingly ‘regular’ family in the Boston area while learning about Huntington’s disease. Lisa Genova... Continue Reading →
Russian Salad – My father’s favorite
Sharing Pappa’s (my father’s) favorite- Russian Salad.
I write this post with such a heavy heart. Even as I write, I am in disbelief that we lost Pappa, my dearest father, last week. As I grapple with my emotions, I know that my brother and I will always miss him. I remember my kind, loving, extremely witty, sports loving father, who was truly a gifted athlete himself. In his college days, he was the captain for Bombay University’s cricket team three years in a row! When I was growing up, I remember his many badminton tournament victories. In his later years, he went for his early morning walks, loved playing tennis, and going swimming. No matter which sport he picked, he was a natural at it!

I think that it was during his cricket days that…
